Many dog owners have discovered that a little CBD oil each day has done wonders for their canine’s mood, physical comfort levels, energy levels and more. But, as you may have guessed, not every company out there right now making CBD oil has your dog’s best interest in mind. Some companies are going to give you much better results than others, but how can you know which CBD oil is worth investing in when it comes to supporting your dog?
Tip #1: Look for a CBD Pet Formula
Make sure that you’re buying a CBD oil that’s made for pets. The hemp market is filled with CBD oils that are great for humans, but not so great for our furry companions. For example, some CBD oils are flavored with essential oils – ingredients that our bodies can tolerate, but which can be harmful or even deadly for our dogs. Besides that, CBD oils made for humans come in doses that are appropriate for our bodies, but a dog who weighs, say, a quarter of what we do just doesn’t need all of that cannabidiol each day.
Tip #2: Read the Ingredients
Whenever you buy any CBD-based product for your dog, read the ingredients carefully. Besides the fact that like we said, human CBD oils may contain flavoring ingredients that are harmful to canines, some companies may sneak fillers or additives in their products that, even if not dangerous, can be generally bad for your dog’s health in the long run. The cleaner and more plant-based the formula, the better. CBD oil doesn’t need to contain much else other than hemp extract, a plant-based carrier oil and some type of natural flavoring. Also, of course, if your dog has allergies, you will need to be extra careful to not choose a formula that contains your dog’s specific allergens.
Tip #3: Consider Flavor or No Flavor
Plenty of companies make flavored CBD oils, with options like bacon, chicken or fish to appeal to your dog’s taste buds, making it all the easier to get them to truly look forward to their daily doses. Some dogs may also prefer unflavored. In general, it’s important to consider the flavor of the CBD oil to make sure that it’s something that will appeal to your dog. And once again, keep in mind that natural flavoring is always better – not only for your health, but also because artificial flavoring tends to taste, well, artificial, which may be a turnoff for your pup.
Tip #4: Look at the Dosage
Each dog may end up having their own dosage requirements, and you might need to play around a bit with the dosage before finding out what’s most effective for your dog. Fortunately, you can do that with CBD, since its nontoxic nature means that you don’t need to be overly strict with how much you’re giving them. Generally, though, a CBD oil should have a dosage guide somewhere on the label that takes into account the weight of your dog. So, make sure that you can find a dosage guide when shopping for a CBD oil to give to your dog daily.
Tip #5: View Third-Party Lab Reports
All CBD products are required to undergo a third-party-testing process before they can be sold. This testing process looks at things like the purity level of the CBD oil, whether or not it contains harmful toxins or contaminants, how potent it is and the breakdown of its chemical compounds. These lab reports should be easy to find on a company’s website so that you can refer to them and verify that you’re getting a high-quality product. Always look at these lab reports before making a purchase.
Tip #6: Read Reviews
It’s helpful to read reviews of a CBD oil before buying it for your dog. This way, you will know what customers have to say about things like its effectiveness, how it tastes and what it’s useful for. Obviously, if you see a lot of negative reviews, you might want to reconsider buying from that company.
Tip #7: Choose Organically Derived CBD
In general, it’s always best to go with a CBD oil that starts with organically grown hemp material. That way, you know you’re not feeding your pup a daily serving of pesticides and other environmental toxins that can accumulate in their body and cause problems down the road. A company should always specify whether or not the hemp that they use was grown organically, but if you can’t find this info anywhere, it never hurts to ask.
Tip #8: Opt for Full Spectrum
We always recommend choosing full spectrum CBD oil as this may be more effective for your dog overall. Full spectrum CBD oil contains full spectrum hemp extract, an extract of the hemp plant that retains the plant’s entire chemical composition as it exists in nature. This can be beneficial because it promotes the entourage effect, which refers to the synergistic benefits of consuming all compounds together “as nature intended”. Full spectrum hemp doesn’t just contain a naturally high concentration of cannabidiol, but also other cannabinoids, terpenes, phytonutrients, and flavonoids that can all contribute to the product’s ability to provide relief and head-to-toe support.
